Hard Beat (Solo Iteration)

Aleksandra Petrushevska

Hard Beat (Solo Iteration) is a choreographic work by Aleksandra Petrushevska that reimagines Teshkoto, a traditional Macedonian male folk dance often regarded as intangible cultural heritage. The aim is not to preserve it, but to question it, disrupt it, draw inspiration from it, stretch its frame, weave in other dance and music styles, and transform its meanings from a female perspective.
Hard Beat (Solo Iteration) refers both to a hard-hitting drumbeat and a pounding heartbeat. While this body–drum relationship might suggest rapid movements and beats, the piece instead explores a more nuanced and unpredictable rhythmicality. It invites the audience to witness a dance that is precise and controlled in execution, yet soft and grounded in presence. Out of slow, hypnotic, weighted shifts and footwork, a gradual acceleration builds, distorting both rhythm and form until neither can be sustained or clearly recognized.
Hard Beat (Solo Iteration) rewinds time, looping back to re-inscribe the dance itself. It builds structure, breaks it apart, and begins again—to make another dance.
